Incentive 2 Quit Pilot Program.
WHAT IS IT?
Program Overview.
The Incentive 2 Quit (I2Q) pilot is being undertaken by Drug & Alcohol Services South Australia in conjunction with Houd Research to reduce the negative impacts of smoking and vaping in SA. I2Q is the first government-funded initiative in the world to implement a program based on the evidence that you are 2-3 times more likely to successfully quit smoking if you receive a monetary incentive. The pilot has been specifically designed for the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network by experts in smoking cessation, in collaboration with health professionals and patients. The program additionally features culturally-tailored resources for Aboriginal participants, supported by our close relationship to NALHN Services.
How Does It work?
Incentives & Participation.
The I2Q program will support your quitting journey by providing up to $150 in supermarket gift cards, putting you in touch with Quitline experts, and offering quit support resources. The program is available to join throughout 2024 and guides participants through various actions to support smoking and vaping cessation over 6 months.
Participants complete three steps to earn monetary incentives and progress through their quitting journey:
- Initial appointment with a health professional – earn $20 by starting the conversation and reaching out to Quitline
- Three-month follow-up appointment – earn up to $50 if you have quit* smoking/vaping and have talked with Quitline 3 or more times
- Six-month follow-up appointment – earn up to $80 if you have quit* smoking/vaping
*To earn the maximum incentives at 3 and 6 months, you’re required you to verify your smoking status using a carbon monoxide breath test (if cigarette user) or cotinine saliva test (if vape user). Click here to see what’s involved.

WHAT CAN I DO?
Evidence & Additional Resources.
About Incentivisation: There is strong evidence to support the use of financial incentive to encourage smoker quit attempts, with outcomes of long-term success. One 2019 Cochrane review of 33 studies with over 21,000 participants identified an almost 50% increase in the likelihood o quitting with incentives at the longest follow-up period. (Australian Bureau of Statistics Pandemic insights into Australian smokers, 2020-21. 2021)
About Quitline: Quitline is a confidential telephone advice service for people who want to quit smoking or remain off the smokes. A trained counsellor can help you to make a quitting plan and develop strategies to quit smoking and stay smoke free. Quitline can help you in a number of different ways, including if you:
• are thinking about quitting
• are ready to quit
• want to remain off the smokes
You can call Quitline on 13 78 48, visit quitlinesa.org.au to request a call back or engage in a web chat with a Quitline counsellor. Aboriginal Quitline is also available to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who smoke.
WHY QUIT?
What Happens When You Quit.
When you have a cigarette, within 10 seconds of the first puff, the poisonous chemicals in tobacco smoke reach vital organs including your heart and brain. Shortly after, your blood pressure and pulse rate begin to rise. But your body is very good at healing itself, so you may be surprised to see real health benefits benefits in quitting smoking within a very short time period, just twenty minutes to be exact. After a single day without smoking, the benefits are as follows;
20 Minutes
• Blood pressure decreases
• Pulse rate decreases
4-6 Hours
• Breath becomes fresher
• Nicotine levels in the body start to fall quickly
• Nicotine withdrawal sets in and can result in symptoms and feelings such as irritability and restlessness
6-24 Hours
• Heart rate slows to normal
• Blood pressure stabilizes
• Immediate risk of heart attack starts to fall
• Carbon monoxide level in the blood falls significantly
• Oxygen level increases enabling muscles, the heart, and other vital organs to work more efficiently
